Tibet earthquake: Scores dead as tremor strikes holy city

A powerful earthquake struck the Tibetan region, leaving scores dead and widespread destruction in its wake. The 6.9-magnitude tremor struck near Lhasa, the historic and spiritual capital of Tibet, during the early hours of the day. The quake devastated communities, collapsing buildings, and leaving residents scrambling for safety amidst the chaos.

Reports indicate that hundreds of people are injured, with emergency services working tirelessly to rescue those trapped under the rubble. Remote mountainous areas have suffered the worst, with entire villages reduced to ruins. The death toll, currently in the dozens, is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Access to the affected areas is challenging due to damaged infrastructure and landslides triggered by the quake.

Lhasa, known as a sacred city in Tibetan Buddhism, was not spared. Several ancient monasteries, some dating back centuries, have sustained significant damage. The iconic Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reportedly suffered structural cracks, raising concerns about the preservation of the region’s cultural heritage. Local monks and residents have joined rescue efforts, pulling survivors from the debris and offering aid to the injured.

The Tibetan plateau is seismically active, sitting near the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Earthquakes in the region are not uncommon, but the scale of this disaster has overwhelmed local authorities. International aid organizations and neighboring countries have offered assistance, with teams of rescue workers and relief supplies on standby. Helicopters are being deployed to deliver essential goods such as food, water, and medical supplies to remote areas cut off by the disaster.

Survivors describe scenes of panic and devastation as buildings swayed and collapsed. “It felt like the earth was splitting apart,” said one resident, recounting the terrifying moments during the quake. Temporary shelters have been set up to house those displaced, though harsh winter conditions in the region are complicating relief efforts.

The Tibetan government-in-exile has issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims and appealing for global solidarity. Meanwhile, experts warn of aftershocks, urging residents to remain vigilant. As rescue efforts continue, the focus is on saving lives and rebuilding a region steeped in cultural and spiritual significance. This earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable power of nature and the vulnerability of communities in such volatile regio
