Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith sustained a right knee injury during the third quarter of Sunday night’s 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The injury occurred when Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper delivered a legal hit to Smith’s legs, causing an awkward landing. Smith exited the game and did not return, with backup quarterback Sam Howell stepping in for the remainder of the contest.
On Monday, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald provided an encouraging update on Smith’s condition. Speaking on Seattle Sports’ weekly Mike Macdonald Show, he stated, “Geno’s a beast, man. He was in here working out this morning, working through it. I know he’s still feeling it, but this guy’s tough as nails. Hopefully we’ll see him practice throughout the week, and [I’m] optimistic of him being ready for the game.”
Macdonald further noted that initial assessments suggest Smith’s knee is structurally sound, though additional imaging tests are planned to confirm the extent of the injury. “We’re fortunate,” Macdonald said. “A lot of positive, optimistic signs coming out of the tests.”
Smith’s injury comes at a critical juncture for the Seahawks, who are currently 8-6 and vying for a playoff spot. Their next game is scheduled against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, December 22, 2024. Macdonald expressed hope that Smith will be able to participate in practice leading up to the game and be available to start. If Smith is unable to play, Sam Howell, who completed 5 of 14 passes for 24 yards and an interception after replacing Smith against the Packers, would likely start in his place.
Smith, 34, has been instrumental in the Seahawks’ offense this season, and his potential absence could significantly impact the team’s playoff aspirations. The Seahawks are preparing for the possibility of Howell starting but remain hopeful that Smith’s injury will not sideline him for the upcoming crucial matchup against the Vik
ings.
