Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a mild high ankle sprain during the team’s recent victory over the Cleveland Browns. Despite this injury, Mahomes participated fully in Tuesday’s practice, indicating a potential return for the upcoming game against the Houston Texans.
Head coach Andy Reid has expressed that Mahomes’ availability will depend on his health leading up to the game. Reid stated, “If he can go, he’ll go,” emphasizing that the decision will prioritize Mahomes’ well-being.
In the event that Mahomes is unable to play, backup quarterback Carson Wentz is expected to start. Reid has confidence in Wentz’s abilities, noting that he “should be starting” in the league.
The Chiefs currently hold a 13-1 record and are aiming to secure the AFC’s top seed, which would grant them a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Their upcoming schedule includes games against the Houston Texans on December 21 and the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 25.
Given Mahomes’ pivotal role in the team’s success, some analysts suggest that resting him until the playoffs could be beneficial. Former NFL MVP Matt Ryan commented, “If it was me, I would sit him… to have him fresh for the playoff st
retch.”
