Mexico asks US to hand over ‘mastermind’ in journalist’s killing

.                                       Mexico has formally requested the United States to extradite a suspect believed to be the mastermind behind the murder of journalist Alfredo Cardoso Echeverría. Cardoso, the founder of the online news outlet Dos Costas, was abducted from his home in Acapulco, Guerrero, in October 2021. Days later, he was found with gunshot wounds and later succumbed to his injuries. His killing highlighted the risks journalists face in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for media workers.

 

The request for extradition reflects Mexico’s growing pressure to address impunity in crimes against journalists. According to authorities, the suspect fled to the United States shortly after the crime. By seeking his return, Mexico aims to strengthen its efforts to bring justice for Cardoso and signal a tougher stance against attacks on the press.

 

Press freedom advocates and international organizations have consistently criticized Mexico for its failure to protect journalists and prosecute perpetrators. Since 2000, over 150 journalists have been killed in Mexico, with few cases resulting in convictions. Cardoso’s murder was emblem
