Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes has ‘chance’ to suit up in Week 16 despite ankle injury

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a mild high-ankle sprain during the fourth quarter of the team’s 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns. The injury occurred when Mahomes was tackled by multiple defenders, leading to an awkward fall that impacted his right ankle. He exited the game and did not return, with backup quarterback Carson Wentz finishing the contest.

Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes’ ankle is not broken but remains sore. Mahomes is currently considered week-to-week, and his participation in practice this week will determine his availability for the upcoming game against the Houston Texans.

The Chiefs are entering a demanding stretch, with three games scheduled over an 11-day period. Given the team’s 13-1 record and strong position for playoff seeding, there is speculation that the Chiefs may opt to rest Mahomes to ensure his full recovery for the postseason. If Mahomes is unable to play, Carson Wentz is expected to start in his place.

Mahomes has a history of playing through injuries, notably leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory in 2023 despite a similar ankle issue. However, the team’s medical staff and coaching personnel are likely to prioritize his long-term health over immediate returns, especially with the playoffs approaching.

As the week progresses, further evaluations will clarify Mahomes’ status for Week 1
